The Rite of Spring

When The Rite of Spring premiered at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in 1913 with a score by Igor Stravinsky and choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, it famously sparked a riot. What was the big deal? The piece, created for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russe, told a violent story of pagan sacrificial rites, using dissonant chords and inelegant, heavy dance movements. This year marks the centennial anniversary of The Rite of Spring's debut, and in celebration, the Carolina Ballet will present Christopher Stowell's acclaimed 2009 version, choreographed for Oregon Ballet Theatre. To honor the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner, the program will also feature Idyll, a piece by Robert Weiss, the Carolina Ballet's artistic director. —Emma Miller
