The Princess Bride

When: Wed., Dec. 19, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $5.50

Is there anything more guaranteed to bring a smile to one's face than Rob Reiner's 1987 adaptation of William Goldman's "good parts" version of the nonexistent novel by S. Morgenstern? It achieves that rare quality of satirizing the stereotypes of old-fashioned stories while capturing what makes them so enduring. Simply spit out a line like "Inconceivable!" or "I do not think it means what you think it means," or, of course, "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." and watch your friends light up. If they do not light up, they are not your friends.

Incidentally, Mandy Patinkin, who played Inigo Montoya, films Homeland in Charlotte and apparently loves quoting the "You killed my father" line for fans. I've just never had the time nor energy to properly commit to some stalking for that purpose. The screening starts at 7:30 p.m. —Zack Smith
