"The Nativity in Art, Words & Music"

When: Sat., Dec. 8, 2:30 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

The classic argument for opera as the greatest art posits that a combination of a literary score, a musical composition, and a painterly set design and costuming culminate in a singular, grand event. This concept, however, doesn't need to be on a grand scale. In "The Nativity in Art, Words and Music," NCMA's curator of European art David Steel joins with musicians from the North Carolina Symphony and Church of the Nativity in Raleigh to weave a lecture into a story about St. Nick, Christmas and the museum's collection. Seasonal music and poetry emerge from both contemporary and antiquated works in this fun holiday take on an art lecture made possible, in part, by the Humber Endowed Lecture Series. Get free tickets for the 2:30 p.m. talk and reception from the museum box office. —Chris Vitiello
