The Match King

When: Fri., March 16, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

Continuing its "Mad About Mad Men" film series, the NCMA presents the enthralling 1932 cautionary tale of The Match King. If it weren't for the names being changed, this would be a biopic of Swedish safety match tycoon Ivar Kreuger, whose spectacular, cutthroat ascent probably went straight into the playbooks of future Enron executives. In this industrialist tragedy, Paul Knoll (Warren William) uses an escalating array of masculine charms, brazen graft and, eventually, murder in his rise from the gutter to owning every match factory in Sweden. When a kindly inventor develops an everlasting match, Knoll has him thrown in an asylum. Once a forger hands over millions in fake bonds, the man takes an unanticipated dip in a lake. But, as bad guys do in the movies at least, Knoll gets his in the end. Directed by William Keighley and Howard Bretherton, the film also features Lili Damita and Glenda Farrell in a Library of Congress archive print. Tickets to the 8 p.m. screening in the NCMA's East Building auditorium are $5, or $3.50 for members of the museum, Galaxy Cinema or Cinema, Inc. —Chris Vitiello
