Hailed as the greatest Egyptian film ever made, director Youssef Chahine's 1969 epic The Land details the struggle in the changing lifestyles in feudal Egypt. Based on the novel by Abdel Rahman al-Sharqawi, it deals with the conflict between a corrupt pasha and a cotton-growing peasant village in the Nile Valley. Against this backdrop, a love triangle unfolds among the peasant Abdel Hadi (Ezzat El Alaili) and the educated Mohammed Effendi (Hamdi Ahmad) for Wassifa (Nagwa Ibrahim). The Land screens as part of the Cinema Inc. series at the Rialto; prorated memberships are available. —Zack Smith
