5 years ago: Afefe L. Tyehimba analyzed the growing need for AIDS funding in North Carolina. The need for financial assistance was not met by the amount of funding in 1998, due to the increase in AIDS patients and the expense of medication.
10 years ago: Melinda Ruley commented on the Michael Seagroves case, which was declared a mistrial. Seagroves was accused of shooting 15-year-old intruder Jamal Elliot, who broke into his garage to steal a motorcycle.
20 years ago: Clint Schemmer reported on Jesse Helms' opposition to the N.C. Wilderness Bill, which would triple wilderness acreage in the state's national forests. Sen. Helms wanted to ban the U.S. Forest Service from beginning the process of designating more federal land as wilderness.

Being the community
In Raleigh's Moore Square and around Main Street in Durham, we ignore people who we assume don't have housing. Rocky and those like him go to Love Wins or the Maurin House to find eye contact, to hear a "good morning," to be a part of their cities.
