Looking back

Here's what The Indy was writing about the week of Oct. 8:

5 years ago: Monte Paulsen reported on the death of Esequiel Hernandez Jr., the first American civilian killed by U.S. troops since the Kent State massacre in 1970. Paulsen investigated the way the military's bureaucracy impedes soldiers' training, and the ineffectiveness of the war on drugs.

10 years ago: Bob Burtman critiqued major newspapers' coverage of Biosphere, a prototype space colony in Arizona, particularly noting how most papers glossed over most of the project's absence of scientific validity, and its heavy-handed media manipulation.

20 years ago: Katherine Fulton investigated whether North Carolina faced danger from potential Cold War-era nuclear strikes and spoke with a pair of Greenboro-based civic defenders who were questioning the worth of federal nuclear defense strategies of evacuation.
