One of the memos Elliston uncovered quoted local FBI officer Robert Murphy as writing, "even a New Left group operating on a college campus has the advantage of wrapping itself in the cloak of academic freedom."
10 years ago: Beth Szymkowski illustrated how Arcadia, a Carrboro-based co-housing community in the planning, was less a commune and more of a community. The almost 17-acre project would place small, individually owned homes amid a large common house to encourage neighborly interaction.
20 years ago: Ann Morris demonstrated what occurs when Jesse Helms speaks on the Senate floor. In this instance, Helms opposed anti-hunger legislation because "there is no basis to state or imply that poverty-based hunger exists in the United States today." An outraged onslaught from anti-hunger groups followed.
