The Independent Weekly 20th Anniversary

Looking back

Here's what The Indy was writing about the week of Aug. 27:

5 years ago: Derek Jennings reminded Indy readers that while autumn heralds football season, the true beginnings of the game happen in the summer. Jennings was coaching youth football, and the experience not only allowed him to ponder the various phases of his football career, but also allowed him to teach effectively and learn something about himself in the process.

10 years ago: Hal Crowther lamented the commercialized and soap-operatic nature of modern baseball in general. But his disappointment turned to outrage with the nearly $4 million given to Joe DiMaggio to sign 1,941 baseball bats to be sold on a home shopping network.

20 years ago: Barry Jacobs observed the "Prep Stars" basketball camp at Elon College, in which nearly 400 young men participated. Jacobs contrasted the experiences of Danny Manning of Greensboro, who was used to working with prestigious college coaches, and Asheville hopeful Scott King, for whom a coach's interest meant the difference between a scholarship and working his way through school.
