5 years ago: Thomasi McDonald illustrated how residents of Durham's Hayti district--once known as the "Harlem of the South" and praised by Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois alike--were attempting to reclaim the area from its drug-and-crime-riddled reputation. Both N.C. Central and Duke University helped front money to rejuvenate the areas with the Lincoln Community Health Center and the planning of the Eagle Village shopping center. McDonald noted that these universities' links to reviving the Hayti district might make the effort more successful than those in the past.
10 years ago: In a special investigation of health-care reform, Barry Yeoman reported that business lobbyists and big money killed the state's health-care reform goals of 1993. The debate focused on whether the current insurance system should be tweaked or thrown out in place of an approach that issued vouchers to the state's uninsured. That and two other, more radical bills were stopped by the efforts of lobbyists representing the state's business elite, retail merchants and insurance agents.
20 years ago: Rev. Jerry Falwell and Sen. Jesse Helms conducted a tour of North Carolina to register who Falwell described as "everybody who breathes." Falwell added that they were particularly looking to register supporters of "the pro-moral, pro-family cause" that could also breathe.

In Raleigh's Moore Square and around Main Street in Durham, we ignore people who we assume don't have housing. Rocky and those like him go to Love Wins or the Maurin House to find eye contact, to hear a "good morning," to be a part of their cities.
