On the heels of five James Taylor concerts throughout the state, a younger generation of Tar Heel musicians are banding together for two free concerts—one in Asheville, one in Chapel Hill—to promote early voting.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, N.C. Rocks for Change hosts a free concert, beginning with coffee and doughnuts at 9 a.m., and continuing until 1 p.m. The lineup includes a rare appearance by 1980s jangle-popsters The dBs, as well as area stalwarts Ivan Howard of The Rosebuds, Megafaun, I Was Totally Destroying It, Bowerbirds, Greg Humphreys (Hobex), Regina Hexaphone and both of Mac McCaughan’s bands, Portastatic and an acoustic Superchunk.

This concert takes place at Graham Terrace, adjacent to Morehead Planetarium, which is an early voting site. Saturday, Nov. 1 is the last day of early voting. If you’re wondering, there will be no football in Chapel Hill that day; the team is taking the week off.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Asheville’s The Grey Eagle, a different N.C. lineup takes the stage, beginning at 8 p.m. Tift Merritt is the highest profile member of the lineup, but the bill is noteworthy for a rare live appearance by The Reigning Sound. This will also be an opportunity to catch the Electric Owls, recently formed by The Comas’ Andy Herod. The Owls’ lineup also includes The Comas’ Jason Caperton on guitar, The Archers of Loaf’s Matt Gentling on bass and Gutter Twins’ Cully Symington on drums. Rounding out the Grey Eagle bill are musicians who will also be at the Chapel Hill show: The dBs’ Chris Stamey, Hobex’s Humphreys and Portastatic.

Tickets to the Asheville bill will be distributed beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, outside UNC-Asheville’s Zeis Hall, which is an early voting location by the Quad at 1 University Heights. Tickets will be given away during voting hours until they are all gone: 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23-Saturday, Oct. 25 and Monday, Oct. 27.
