The Dark Crystal

The Dark Crystal

When: Wed., Jan. 19, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $5.50
The Dark Crystal is one of those films that seems to frequently play the revival circuits, and often to packed theaters. I must have seen it at least two or three times on the big screen since I moved back to Raleigh in 2006. Part of the reason is there's a certain pleasure in confronting a film that, for a generation of children, scared the holy shit out of them. Along with Labyrinth and the television series The Storyteller, The Dark Crystal represented Jim Henson's attempt to expand his Muppet empire into darker, classic fairy tale stories. But though there's a cute little fuzzy thing and plenty o' Muppets, The Dark Crystal is most notable for Brian Froud's craggy, horrific designs. Whether it's the vulture-like Skeksis, their beetle-ish servants the Garthim, or even the heroic old crone Aughra, the visuals of The Dark Crystal seep into your mind and stay there once you go to sleep. As you get older, the film seems less scary and the visuals more cool, which is likely why a sequel was announced last year, after comic book versions were issued by Tokyopop and Archaia Studios. Relive the trauma or experience it for the first time for a mere $5.50 starting at 8 p.m. —Zack Smith
