The Carper Family

When: Sat., June 22, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $6-14

Last year at Austin's SXSW, this cheekily named hometown trio of young women playing old-time music on acoustic guitar, upright bass and fiddle joined a lineup that consisted largely of acts from the city's old-school pop underground. The bill seemed ill-fated on the surface, but the Carpers' local peers wound up expressing sincere appreciation for the trio's ability to infuse traditional music with a contemporary kick. They captured that magic on their third album, Old-Fashioned Gal, which came out three weeks ago. —Peter Blackstock
