It is getting almost impossible to keep track of all the revival screenings at the Carolina Theatre (which recently became the host of the second-longest-running revival series in the country with its Retrofantasma features). But take a special look at this double feature of two lesser-known collaborations between Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Yes, you might well remember Lugosi's profanity-laden dismissal of Karloff in Tim Burton's Ed Wood, but it was often a treat to see these two kings of horror onscreen together, and this is no exception. Both tales employ the titles and little else from Edgar Allan Poe stories. 1934's The Black Cat pits Lugosi's psychiatrist against Karloff's evil dark priest, and 1935's The Raven turns the tables, with Lugosi's mad doctor transforming Karloff's convict into a monster to help him kidnap a lady and put her fiancé in a Poe-inspired dungeon. A little more than an hour each, these films are great fun and helped introduce me to Karloff and Lugosi, via the little Crestwood House photo books of films you used to find at the public library. You remember those, right? They had orange covers and adapted old monster movies? Anyway, horror doesn't get much more old-school than this. —Zack Smith
