The Beach Girls and the Monster

The Beach Girls and the Monster

When: Fri., Aug. 5, 7 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

They just don't make beach movies like they used to. Ah, the days of actors in their 20s playing swimsuit-clad teenagers all about catching waves, rocking out and stoking sweet summer romance by the bonfire! Was Back to the Beach, with Pee Wee Herman's "Surfin' Bird" dance, the final word on the subject, or did From Justin to Kelly put a nail in the coffin decades later? Debate that with yourself while you enjoy the A/V Geeks' presentation of 1965's The Beach Girls and the Monster, an epic tale of ... well, beach girls. And a monster. We tried reading a few plot summaries, and we couldn't quite make sense of it, though it's clear that there are definitely girls and a monster, and the monster's covered in seaweed. And there's also a lot of Hawaiian surfing footage and a killer surf soundtrack that even includes a theme song by Frank Sinatra Jr.! The show starts at 7 p.m.; if you arrive early, you'll get to hear a local band play some surf music, and if you stay late, you can play trivia. There's also a short from the A/V Geeks' archives. And did we mention this is all free? —Zack Smith
