The Bank Dick

How unlikely a movie star was W.C. Fields? Specializing in portraying overweight, misanthropic drunks, Fields also became one of the pioneers of surrealist comedy in his later years. The Bank Dick is perhaps his most accessible vehicle, with Fields as Egbert Sousé (pronounced "Soo-SAY," as he'll repeatedly tell you), who accidentally foils a bank robbery and gets hired for bank security. At least that's what the 1940 film is about on paper. Really, it's an excuse for Fields to banter with his onscreen family and bartender (Shemp Howard of The Three Stooges) and, for no apparent reason, to abandon his post to direct a film being shot nearby. Fields leveraged his success with such films as My Little Chickadee to gain control over this film, even scripting it under the nom de plume "Mahatma Kane Jeeves" (from a line of dialogue, "My hat, my cane Jeeves!").
