Consider this a showcase of longstanding local talent working the country-rock vein: The Backsliders ascended the Triangle's musical ranks during the mid-'90s alongside Whiskeytown and Six String Drag by blending honky-tonk, post-Parsons spirit and aching balladry. They reunited last year and have kept busy with local sets since. Erin Nenni's joined in her vocal strut by former Six String Drag guitarist Scott Miller. Tracks like "Sinners and Saints" mine '70s country and twangy rock keenly enough for Nashville. Meanwhile, Michael Rank recently released Mermaids, his third album with STAG. The bedraggled rock sounds once-beaten-and-twice-self-inflicted. "There ain't nothing I've come to trust," Rank sings—except, maybe, that this will be a fine bill.
