Andrea E. Woods Valdés provides a psychic tonic for the contemporary isolation of a smartphone-obsessed world in this new dance-theater piece, premiering with several shows this weekend. Calling her work "performed folklore," she layers legend and memory onto the present through storytelling and ritual, building an intergenerational feminine identity. Her movement, danced along with Jessica Burroughs, Chanelle Croxton, Aya Shabu and Kara M. Simpson, brings African diasporic forms into modern choreography—with a hint of double-dutch. Cellist Shana Tucker contributes an original score, and there is additional music by flutist Julia Price. Narrator Dorothy N. Clark, quilter Heather A. Williams and costume designer Pamela Bond help realize the work, which is ultimately about maintaining direct connections with the people—present and absent—in one's life. —Chris Vitiello
