The Blakes
  • The Blakes

Chapel Hill
LOCAL 506—Navigating between luxuriantly groovy indie jangle and jagged, jerky bounce, this Seattle trio splits the difference between the Strokes swagger and dance-punk pulse. The result avoids the self-satisfied smirk of the former and the melodic paucity of the latter, finding a catchy sweetspot that may ruin your appetite for dinner. The anthem-addicted Red Collar open at 9 p.m. Bring $8. —Chris Parker

CARRBORO CENTURY CENTER—On the heels of the Asheville Film Festival and Wilmington's Cucalorus is our own hometown movie bash: the second annual Carrboro Film Fest. This year's line-up features 27 locally filmed and directed productions, with a hefty number of documentaries and fictional films covering subjects ranging from Christmas wish lists to lady wrestlers to breaking and entering. As a bonus, there are guaranteed popcorn breaks and small-group discussions with the filmmakers. The celluloid (or digital video) rolls at 2 p.m. and goes until 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and kids under 10 get in free. —Kathy Justice

HAYTI HERITAGE CENTER—Bassist John Brown will celebrate the release of Terms of Art: A Tribute to Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers Vol. 1 at Hayti Heritage Center at 7 p.m. The release, an excellent trip through a deep canon, will be available at a discount. Admission is $10. —Grayson Currin
