Boykin Center--The new Theater of the American South festival opens this week with a regional production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and this amazing, amusing one-man show, in which Troy Mink depicts 13 addled Tennesseans looking to a ghost to bring economic renewal to their small town. Bad idea--but a really funny play. Catch it Friday if you're booked today. For more festival info, check the Web site: www.theateroftheamericansouth.org. --Byron Woods

The Vibekillers

Slim's--Chip Robinson is the Tommy Lee Jones of expatriate Triangle frontguys. And I'm not quite sure what I mean by that, either. But just watch Robinson command that little corner of Slim's Downtown while fellow Vibekillers Skillet Gilmore and Dave Bartholomew join him in blasting out Backsliders songs, a couple newer compositions, and plenty of cult-fave covers from the likes of Wayne Kramer and Matthew Ryan, and tell me that it doesn't somehow seem fitting. It's all about presence. Being a Sunday show, it's blessed with an early start time of 8 p.m. And as always at Slim's, there's no cover. --Rick Cornell
