Chamber Music Festival of the Triangle
Memorial Hall/ Nelson Music Room/ Fletcher Opera Theater—The UNC Music Department, Carolina Performing Arts, Duke Performances and the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild team up this weekend for the fifth annual Chamber Music Festival of the Triangle, featuring the contemporary-minded Chiara String Quartet. Known for its range and willingness to play non-traditional venues, the Chiara Quartet leans toward the classics for a set of chamber music performances, highlighted with works by Brahms, Prokofiev and Bartok.

Chiara brings three programs to three Triangle venues over three days, drawing on resources from its sponsoring organizations: The Chapel Hill concert features UNC music faculty members Mayron Tsong (piano) and Richard Luby (violin), as well as N.C. Symphony players Anton Jivaev (principal viola) and Bonnie Thron (principal cello). At Duke, Chiara plays a series of short pieces by modern composers, bookended by two Mozart string quartets. And in Raleigh, the ensemble focuses on music by composers immersed in more than one culture and features works by Bartok, Gabriela Lena Frank and Zhou Long. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday (Memorial Hall) and Saturday (Nelson Music Room) and 3 p.m. Sunday (Fletcher Theater). Ticket prices range $15-$25. Along with the performances, September Prelude V offers master classes for adult chamber musicians on Saturday at UNC, with coaches from the music faculties at UNC and Duke as well as the North Carolina Symphony. —Margaret Hair
