Sweet Honey in the Rock

Duke Gardens—Warm, complex and beautiful, Sweet Honey in the Rock is a national treasure. The female African-American a cappella group formed in 1973 and recently performed in Obama's White House for Black History Month. With two original members remaining, five voices join together, singing gospel, blues and jazz-influenced numbers, their overlapping harmonies recalling a pipe organ in a country church. The sixth member of the ensemble interprets songs into sign language, suggesting truth needn't yield to one language. This free performance commemorates the 75th anniversary of Duke Gardens. Listen at 4 p.m. Visit dukeperformances.duke.edu. —Andrew Ritchey
