Chapel Hill
Saint Solitude, Polynya

The Cave—The brainchild of Asheville's Dup Crosson, one-man outfit Saint Solitude weaves stacks of guitar loops into wide-eyed pop songs, marrying Explosions In The Sky crescendo to Brit-pop melancholy. It plays mostly like hazy mope-rock, though Crosson's gentle guitar dynamics add an extra bit of oomph. Chapel Hill's Polynya is a markedly more propulsive outfit, but the parallel comes in the way each band treats its arrangements, layering pieces together to create dense tunes. Where Saint Solitude's crescendos veer toward space, Polynya's synths burble and guitars splinter like water starting to freeze. The show starts at 10 p.m. for your donated dollars. —Bryan Reed
