Yarn, The Howlies
Slim's Downtown—Though we've long passed the point where Americana was the new black, Brooklyn's Yarn offer more than cowboy boots and a muddy duster. The twin guitar, dobro and mandolin-led six-piece copped a country-tone for its self-titled 2007 debut, but gets more rollicking for the August follow-up, Empty Pockets. Plenty of guests (incuding lovely Chica Caitlin Cary) enrich the texture of the bluegrass-tinged arrangements. Atlanta openers The Howlies delivers garage pop that bubbles to the point of bursting, like a coke can pinned into a pneumatic paint shaker. Wait for the insistent hooks grab your ankles like stirrups, tossing you back into a vortex of Dolls-ish vocal sneer. Tickets run $5 at 10 p.m. —Chris Parker
