Still Life
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2006 Venice Film Festival, Jia Zhangke's 2006 film Still Life takes a look at the way the Three Gorges Dam changed the face of China. It concerns two characters looking for their spouses who find themselves settled in an area rendered underwater by the dam. The dense, sometimes dreamlike film combines elements of reality-based social commentary with magical realism (one building takes off like a rocket before a demolition team can get to it). It's a fascinating look into Chinese society and the nearly one million people displaced by the Three Gorges Dam. —Zack Smith
