Our critics' picks in new releases

Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking. ... With a new generation of Brazilian musicians re-examining their cultural roots, bossa nova is back. Although Bebel Gilberto has been a New Yorker since the early '90s (she's worked with David Byrne and Arto Lindsey, among others), the Brazilian songstress-vocalist exudes the dreamy sensuality that made Astrud Gilberto a sensation in the '60s. It's no accident that Bebel swings like a samba; her father is bossa pioneer Joao Gilberto (Getz/Gilberto), responsible for the bossa nova craze that swept America back in the hi-fi era. Tanto Tempo, recorded and arranged by the late Brazilian producer Suba, is simultaneously modern and sensually retro: Along with her own jazzy neo-bossa compositions, Bebel reinterprets four familiar Brazilian classics. If her sultry rendition of "So Nice (Summer Samba)" doesn't make you want to mix up a Coco Loco and head for the nearest hammock (make that a hammock for two), then you've got ice water running in your veins.
