Simone Dinnerstein

You'd think that, with all the available recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations, it would be impossible to impress anybody with a new one. But that's what pianist Simone Dinnerstein did in 2007, becoming a leading interpreter of the classical giant almost overnight with her self-financed debut. Her playing is emotionally clear without bringing a clinical approach to the score, which makes her handling of Bach seem personal, as if she's playing for you in her living room. A video for her latest album of works by Bach and Schubert, Something Almost Being Said, manifests her integration of art and life with shots of her playing the keyboard and playing Jenga with her family. This recital features several Bach partitas as well as a jazzy Brahms intermezzo and meditative pieces by Schubert and Chopin. Dinnerstein also reprises Daniel Felsenfeld's "Cohen Variations" from her performance with Tift Merritt at Duke last year. This 8 p.m. show is rescheduled from Jan. 20; those tickets will still be honored at the door, with more available for $30 (or $5 for Duke students). —Chris Vitiello
