Shawn Colvin

When: Fri., Dec. 7, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $36-46

With her first studio album in six years, Shawn Colvin delivered her best disc since her '90s brush with fame. All Fall Down greatly benefits from producer and guitarist Buddy Miller's subtle elegance. Though busy with guests (Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Jakob Dylan), the album includes entrances and exits so seamless and deployment so unfussy that the soundstage never grows crowded. That favors Colvin's oak-grain croon, allowing it to lay back and inhabit her bedeviled characters rather than strain against the arrangement. The album is more country than Colvin's typically folk fare, but those new textures catalyze and amplify the moods of the tunes. —Chris Parker
