The classic 1959 John Cassavetes film, now considered one of the landmarks of American independent cinema, is part of a film series running in conjunction with Short Distances and Definite Places: The Photographs of William Gedney, an exhibition currently showing at Durham's Center for Documentary Studies. The film, besides featuring Cassavetes' trademark hand-held camera shots and jump cuts, offers a glimpse into the racial climate of New York in the 50s. Lelia (Lelia Goldoni), a light-skinned black who lives with her brothers, confronts the painful reality of the times when her white lover--through meeting her brother--realizes that she's actually black.
