Boy, people love Joss Whedon's space Western Firefly and its theatrical sequel, Serenity. A few years ago, I guest-judged a costume contest at the Raleighwood Cinema Grill, and not only did you have a dozen or so people in kimonos, Hawaiian shirts and, of course, dusters, but there were a half-dozen or so fan-edited videos syncing footage of the series to such songs as "Defying Gravity" from Wicked. If you have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, the entire Firefly series is currently streaming for free on Hulu, so take a weekend and go screen. Go ahead. We'll wait for you.
... Back? Good. OK, so by now you know the short-lived series is set in a faraway future with no aliens but plenty of backwater colonized worlds, where the Alliance is a sort of benevolent dictatorship. If you watch this film, you'll get all sorts of pieces of the puzzle resolved, including why the Alliance is after River and what Reaver looks like. It's sort of this generation's Star Trek, as opposed to the actual Star Trek movie for this generation. By the way, did you know Dark Horse Comics recently did a graphic novel that tells the long-hidden back story of Shepherd Book? Now you know. This screening is a mere $5 as part of "Cool Classics at the Colony" and starts at 8 p.m. —Zack Smith
