The late Seamus Heaney is as close as poets come to household-name status. The Irish Nobel laureate is known for a colloquial yet elegant voice that resonates with academic and popular audiences alike. A few days after the one-year anniversary of Heaney's death, UNC-Chapel Hill's English and Comparative Literature Department hosts this remembrance. It features personal recollections from people who knew the poet, an open-mike reading of favorite Heaney poems (kicked off by Chancellor Carol Folt and Provost James Dean, then opened to the audience) and an exhibit of first editions and correspondence from the Library's archives—one of the largest Heaney collections in the world thanks to donations from a friend of Heaney's, UNC alumnus Henry Pearson. If you're not familiar, sample "Blackberry-Picking" at The Poetry Foundation's website for a representative taste of the sweet and sour flavors Heaney preserved in imperishable verse. —Brian Howe
