Edgar Wright's 2010 adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's series of graphic novels about a slacker who must win the girl of his dreams by battling her seven evil exes failed to set the box office on fire despite rave reviews and a massive media campaign that included a 10-story-high poster at San Diego Comic-Con. In a way, that makes sense: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World feels more like a cult movie than a mainstream effort. Though it loses some of the emotional moments in condensing six 200-page graphic novels into a single movie (the last volume wasn't even finished when they began filming), its anything-goes visual style of animated sound effects, video game-style fights and even a throwaway re-creation of Seinfeld vividly captures O'Malley's combination of pop-culture overload and mundane reality. Also check out the recent color reissues of O'Malley's graphic novels at local comic shops—that's right, there's an excuse to pay money for 'em all over again! Tickets for this 7:30 p.m. Cool Classics at the Colony screening are $5.50. —Zack Smith
