Scarlet Street

When: Fri., April 1, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $5 ($3.50 for students)

Had they gone with the title of the original French novel this 1945 noir was based upon, it would have been known as The Bitch. Obviously you couldn't get away with that back then, but can you think of a better title for a noir? Still, it's a memorably convoluted tale, reteaming legendary director Fritz Lang (Metropolis) with the stars of his 1944 film The Woman in the Window. Edward G. Robinson stars as Christopher Cross, who gets caught between the moon and New York City ... er, between the femme fatale Kitty (Joan Bennett), her boyfriend, his wife, her former husband, some paintings and a lot of other complicated stuff. Banned by the Legion of Decency (there's an awful lot of sex and prostitution if you read between the lines), it remains acclaimed for its stunning production design and uniquely dark atmosphere. The special print, on loan from the Library of Congress, screens at 8 p.m.; tickets are $5, or $3.50 for members of the museum, the Galaxy Cinema and Cinema Inc. Indy contributor Laura Boyes curates the series. —Zack Smith
