This fourth annual benefit for Central Park School for Children helps the neighboring public charter elementary school raise funds for art supplies, field trips, performances, gallery visits and other student art experiences. If you need proof that this is an effort worth supporting, check YouTube for video from a 2010 school assembly of a collaboration between Megafaun and The Beast, which featured an adorable throng of grade-schoolers singing along to Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds."
Both of those acts return for this year's benefit show, and they're joined by Mount Moriah, a band that shows no signs of slowing down after releasing one of last year's finest albums. The group's gorgeous something-like-country follows The Beast, whose emcee Pierce Freelon delivers heady hip-hop bars backed by a trio of jazz hands. In the headlining slot, Megafaun's swirling storm of noisy, experimental Appalachia is imprinted with the mark of a dozen or so disparate genres. Poetic Justice and student bands from CPSC will also perform, while Pie Pushers and KoKyu sling food from their trucks. It all begins at 6 p.m., with a $10 suggested donation. —Spencer Griffith
