Even if most people have no idea who Sergei Eisenstein or Franois Truffaut are, they can still identify on sight the likes of Laurel and Hardy or the Three Stooges. Film comedy is one of those genres that holds up well—ask the packed house laughing themselves silly at the Carolina Theatre's recent Chaplin Retrospective if you need proof. Saul Austerlitz gives film comedy its first major critical and historical evaluation in more than a generation with Another Fine Mess: A History of American Film Comedy. From City Lights to Knocked Up, Austerlitz looks at individual performers and directors to show the evolution of film comedy from the all-time classics to the little-known gems. Austerlitz will read from and sign copies of the book starting at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to check out his other book, Money for Nothing: A History of the Music Video from the Beatles to the White Stripes. —Zack Smith
