Gilbert and Sullivan, New Orleans benefit

DURHAM

PATIENCE, OR BUNTHORNE'S BRIDE

CAROLINA THEATRE--Though both are now widely viewed as exemplifying relative extremes, Gilbert and Sullivan once differed--very publicly--on the topic of aesthetics with Oscar Wilde. The result: another hyperverbal, overtweaked operetta, one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most successful works. Now director Derrick Ivey resets this artistic grudge match against a later cultural skirmish--between the hippies and the beat generation--in this Durham Savoyard production. The show continues through Sunday; tix are $25-$15, call 560-6060 or go to www.carolinatheatre.org for
reservations. --Byron Woods

CHAPEL HILL

NEW ORLEANS BENEFIT WITH
RUSCHA, KERBLOKI, RAZZLE

THE RESERVOIR--As Katrina's lasting effects linger on the Gulf Coast, even while the event drops off the national radar, fundraisers like this one serve a dual purpose. These three local groups are raising a red flag, diverting attention to the disaster, and collecting some money to send south. Tri-colored musical delights await: Ruscha's venomous scatter-shots, conscious party raps with Kerbloki, and a one-off reunion of Razzle's rock maneuvers. Donations are welcome for the 10 p.m. show. --Chris Toenes
