THE CAROLINA BREAKDOWN
THE ARTSCENTER—Perhaps the Tar Heel peak of The ArtsCenter's fantastic fourth annual American Roots Series, The Carolina Breakdown brings some of the best but lesser known sounds of North Carolina to the fore: A big chunk of bluegrass's cradle (or adolescent schoolyard?) is shaped with the Old North State, and Tony Williamson is certainly one of the most remarkable mandolin players here today. His tone is sweet as a pine forest spring afternoon in the sandhills, and he consistently leads top-shelf bands throughout the state. The Allen Boys are the state's only sacred steel band, with 12-string steel leader DaShawn Hickman often using an E-bow and guitar pedals on his traditional instrument, making him something of a rogue in a limited but vibrant field. Also, The Branchettes and Laurelyn Dossett. Tickets to the 8:30 p.m. show are $13. —Grayson Currin
