RALEIGH
CARMINE PRIOLI
QUAIL RIDGE BOOKS & MUSIC—The horse herd on Shackleford Banks has always been a point of fascination for North Carolinians. North Carolina State University professor and author Carmine Prioli's latest book, The Wild Horses of Shackleford Banks, is an overview of the equine community. Join Prioli for his publication party at 2 p.m. For more info, call 828-1588. —Iesha Brown

CARRBORO
TRANSACTORS IMPROV CO.
ARTSCENTER—Just as the Triangle becomes a formidable improv destination, local favorites The Transactors are hitting the road to perform at the prestigious Chicago and San Francisco Improv Festivals. Meet them in Carrboro for Transactors Across America, one of their signature improv/concert/cabarets with musical accompaniment, this time with travel themes and funky Bayou blues. The show is at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15 ($7 for students; $25 VIP tickets come with priority seating, pre-show champagne and a post-show reception). See transactors.org/perf.htm for more details. —Marc Maximov

DURHAM
CHARLOTTE MUSIC AWARDSURBAN SHOWCASE
BROAD STREET CAFÉ—You have to admire the eclectic events schedule that the Broad Street Cafe has been posting in its early life, hosting everything from punk festivals and old-time jams to poker nights and Sunday afternoon kids' music shows. In the latest anything-goes news, the Cafe will be one of several venues in North Carolina providing a stage for musicians from Charlotte and the surrounding (and, apparently, sprawling) region to showcase their skills for a panel of judges, with an eye on being nominated for a Charlotte Music Award. This installment is for hip-hop and R&B artists. For more, see www.charlottemusicawards.org. The show begins at 10 p.m. —Rick Cornell
