N.C. Symphony: Haydn Meets Mozart Meets Beethoven

Meymandi Concert Hall—Two North Carolina Symphony regulars— concertmaster Brian Reagin and principal violist Anton Jivaev—anchor this program, which highlights the threads connecting two composers who pushed music squarely into classical perfection and one who reached toward the edge of Romanic distress. A Thursday appearance at UNC-Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall and Friday and Saturday shows at Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall pair the NCSO string stars on Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola before bringing them back into the orchestra for Haydn's Symphony No. 19 and Beethoven's danceable Symphony No. 7. Music director Grant Llewellyn conducts the concert, part of the Duke Medicine Classical Raleigh Series. All shows start at 8 p.m., with seats starting at $30. 7th Annual PlaySlam

The ArtsCenter—Call it theater for the ADD set. The ArtsCenter, in conjunction with the Playwrights Roundtable, hosts the seventh annual PlaySlam, a fast-paced competition where playwrights take a nod from slam poets. In PlaySlam, writers live and die by viewers' approval, as one- to three-minute works are judged and scored by the audience. The top scorers advance into a second round, in which an entirely different short play is performed. You might laugh, you might cry, but you definitely won't be bored. The $5 ticket fee includes a scorecard. The show starts at 8 p.m. Check out www.artscenterlive.org for more information.—Sam Wardle
