Sarah Dessen

When: Mon., May 16, 7:30 p.m. 2011

Damn, Chapel Hill novelist Sarah Dessen is a machine—every year, at almost exactly this time, she has a new young adult novel out that gets great reviews and hits the best-seller list. And they don't even have vampires in them or anything! Apparently, she succeeds by being realistic and truthful! Her latest novel is What Happened to Goodbye, a story dealing with the concept of change from both within and without. McLean has constantly shifted identities as she moves from town to town with her restaurant consultant father, tranforming from cheerleader to drama diva at her newest high school. But now she feels a need to finally put down roots—and Dave, the boy next door, might be the one to help her figure out why. Then Dave turns out to be a werewolf and they must save humanity from the wrath of the Cheetah People and their impenetrable Quickening ... that last part might not actually happen. Dessen's reading starts at 7 p.m. —Zack Smith
