Samantha Crain, American Aquarium

When: Tue., Feb. 7, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $8-10

Straddling a fading divide between roots-rock and indie pop, Oklahoma's Samantha Crain voices earthy tales with an enchanting warble. Stripped of her record's layered arrangements (courtesy lately of producer John Vanderslice), Crain and company careen through rustic rock numbers or saunter gracefully through tender folk ballads. Raleigh's American Aquarium returns to its element, performing to packed bars, after recording its fifth full-length in Muscle Shoals last month with former Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell producing and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Spooner Oldham guesting on organ. The barnstorming alt-country quintet releases a live record next week. The same twin bill hits The Pour House in Raleigh on Saturday, Feb. 11. —Spencer Griffith
