Like his parents, Vermont-born, New York-based multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon is a gatherer and translator of nearly forgotten folk songs. With a honeyed voice that's somehow soft and weathered but resplendent still, Amidon delivers those relics—verses about climbing mountains, creek deaths, signs of judgment—with redoubtable sincerity. But Amidon works to adjust the context of these tunes, bringing them into the moment while respecting their aged messages. On record, that means wrapping them in luxurious arrangements, unlikely patterns of piano, strings and electronics pushing and pulling against his ascendant vocals. Working with producers and composers like Valgeir Sigurðsson and Nico Muhly and adventurous bands like Stars Like Fleas, Amidon bends the songs just to the point of almost breaking. Live, that means a casual approach to the music, with starts and stops in songs and unlikely anecdotes and references injected whenever Amdon sees fit. Above all, though, Amidon remains a singer, his voice as vital as his material is aged. Tickets are $5 and $1 for UNC students.—Grayson Currin
