Royal Baths, Paint Fumes

When: Thu., March 8, 10 p.m. 2012
Price: $6-8

Rare are bands that lift from the Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3 and Galaxie 500 who don't rip their muted rock apart but do manage to make it sound fresh and provocative. San Francisco's Royal Baths twist the tones of their idol worship, adding rhythms that trip and modal guitars that hum to decidedly glassy-eyed tunes. There's a touch of the Middle East, a tease of West Africa and a tank of wry indie-rock humor in these songs, pulling Royal Baths far enough away from the obvious antecedents for perspective. Paint Fumes open the 10 p.m. show—Grayson Currin
