Rock mitzvah

The daughter of a good friend of ours celebrated her bat mitzvah, the Jewish celebration marking a 13-year-old's transition to adult responsibilities, this month. She was magnificent as she led the congregation through the ancient Hebrew prayers of the Sabbath and chanted part of the week's reading from the Torah, the first five books of the Bible.

But the music didn't end there. As a party favor for all the kids who celebrated with her later that night, she picked 21 of her favorite current songs and burned them onto CDs. Ever wonder what your young teen is listening to? Here's her list:

Bowling for Soup: "Punk Rock 101," "Friends of Mine," "1985"

MXPX: "My Life Story," "Punk Rock Show"

Seether: "Broken"

Slipknot: "Wait and Bleed"

Story of the Year: "Anthem of Our Dying Day"

Sugarcult: "Stuck in America"

Green Day: "American Idiot," "Basketcase," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"

New Found Glory: "All Downhill From Here"

Good Charlotte: "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous"

Evanescence: "Everybody's Fool"

Lostprophets: "Wake Up (Make A Move)," "Goodbye Tonight"

Vanessa Carlton: "White Houses"

Three Days Grace: "Home," "I Hate Everything About You," "Burn"

And if you're concerned the list shows no historical perspective, as might be appropriate for such a traditional ritual, fear not. She ended the slideshow chronicling her life (so far) with a classic: Joey Ramone's version of "What a Wonderful World." There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Mazel tov, Sarah.

My father is 83 now, and his health is declining. In mid-April, my brother called: "You need to get up here now."

  • Being the community

In Raleigh's Moore Square and around Main Street in Durham, we ignore people who we assume don't have housing. Rocky and those like him go to Love Wins or the Maurin House to find eye contact, to hear a "good morning," to be a part of their cities.

Quietly, by the guidance of our flashlights, we climbed a very long, tight spiral staircase up to the top of the Duke Chapel tower. And not just the bell-tower top, but beyond that.
