Robert DeLong, a rock drummer from Washington state, picked up his kit and dropped it in the middle of a dubstep fury, adding nods to the Nintendo Entertainment System plink-plonk and a part-time camp counselor rap delivery to keep things quirky and summer-festival-friendly. Consider his sunny, fun single "Happy" from the new Just Movement: The orchestration of last decade's grandiose indie pop rubs against a Jason Mraz tune, laced like acid with MGMT's melancholy rave-up "Kids." You're nearly there, but a late-song reverse drop gets truly dark and ominous, making the return of all the feel-good EDM vibes rewarding. DeLong's maximalist messes must be seen and heard in person—lights flickering, fists pumping, people singing—to be believed. He opens for Big Gigantic at this beer company promotional event; online RSVP is required.
