Filmmaker and visiting Duke professor Bill Brown offers slices of raw Americana in the debut event of a monthly film series curated by MFA students in Duke's Experimental and Documentary Arts program. Brown has traipsed through moldering factories in Detroit, shot the burger stands of Lubbock, Texas, and contemplated the appearance of the Virgin Mary on the 13th of each month in California City. His eye and humor are sharp but, like the best of documentarians, also empathetic. Brown has screened works at the Museum of Modern Art and at the Sundance and New York Underground film festivals. The free event begins at 8 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
