Rise of the Guardians IMAX

To its credit, this animated family film doesn't try to reboot an old entertainment franchise for a quick holiday buck. Instead, it reboots childhood lore itself by casting Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman as a team of storybook superheroes tasked with protecting the children of the Earth. The strained premise is redeemed by thrill-ride 3-D effects and deft voice characterizations from Jude Law as the silky villain Pitch, and from Alec Baldwin as a blustery, Slavic Santa. The movie tries way too hard to be magical—you will be enchanted, goddammit!—but the kids won't notice that.
