People forget: Someone actually had to write "Hernando's Hideaway." For two years in the 1950s, composer, lyricist and UNC alum Richard Adler ruled Broadway, penning with partner Jerry Ross whimsical back-to-back smashes: The Pajama Game in 1954 and Damn Yankees in 1955. Both shows took the Tony for best musical; both made memorable entries into the Great American Songbook, including "Whatever Lola Wants," "Steam Heat" and "Hey There (You With the Stars In Your Eyes)."

UNC's dramatic arts and music programs join forces in a concert honoring the late songsmith. Julie Fishell and Louise Toppin will direct re-created scenes from Adler's greatest shows, with Nathaniel Claridad remounting their zany choreography. Host Tim Carter will provide commentary between the acts, including one by a particularly special guest artist: UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp. The free show starts at 7:30 p.m. —Byron Woods
