With its brute force and elasticity, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band is like a grizzly bear bounding through the backwoods. Slingshot resonator guitar fuels an unfettered country blues indebted to the likes of Son House—it's just, well, bigger. Despite the name, this Big Damn Band is just three members strong, but their washboard and drums transform the blues from personal expression to group experience. High-energy songs find grooves the North Mississippi Allstars would envy, and Peyton's bellowing vocals incant spells around love, poverty and fried potatoes. Opening is Michael Holland, local purveyor of string bands, blues and nostalgia. —Andrew Ritchey
