Retrofantasma Classic

When: Fri., Oct. 1 2010
festivals.carolinatheatre.org/retrofantasma

The month of October begins its tradition of horror cinema in fine form with a pair of classics from the Hammer House of Horrors. First up at 7 p.m. is 1970's The Vampire Lovers, which dares viewers to "taste the deadly passion of the blood-nymphs!" One of the first horror films to explicitly deal with lesbian themes, it had a poster that warned viewers that the Peter Cushing/ Ingrid Pitt starrer was "not for the mentally immature." Then at 9:30 p.m. is 1961's The Curse of the Werewolf, with a pre-Oliver! Oliver Reed as a young lycanthrope in Hammer's only werewolf pic. One of my old professors said he met Reed once on the set of Ken Russell's Tommy; he said Reed and Keith Moon were trying to see who could dig himself into the grave first. Moon won, obviously. The double feature is a mere $8. —Zack Smith
